Calculate velocity using a pitot tube4/10/2024 ![]() If a second piezometric opening records the static pressure in the undisturbed flow (P 0), the velocity of the flow may be inferred from the pressure difference (P s-P 0). In this case the tapping point, typically connected to some form of manometer, provides a direct measure of the stagnation pressure, or total pressure, P s. A hydrant’s inside diameter is usually 4. Measure the inside diameter of the outlet nozzle or hydrant outlet where flow occurs. Assume the coefficient of the pitot tube as 0.98. If the density of air and water are 1.13 kg/m kg/m3, respectively, determine the velocity of air. The manometer shows a difference in head of 5 cm of water. ![]() ![]() An annubar consists of several pitot tubes placed across a pipe to provide an approximation of the velocity. The flow rate can be determined from the difference between the static and dynamic pressures, which is the velocity head of the fluid flow. Slowly release the main valve until air is vented. A pitot static tube is used to measure the velocity of air flowing through a duct. The pitot tube measures the static and dynamic pressures of the fluid at one point in the pipe. ![]() If this is aligned with its central axis in the direction of the flow ( Figure 1a) the fluid will accelerate around the upstream face with minimal energy losses, and a stagnation point arises at the piezometric opening. In this video we demonstrate how to use a pitot tube and a manometer to measure velocity pressure, air velocity and airflow. Flush the residual hydrant to remove any sediment and attach a nozzle cap with a gauge to the hydrant’s outlet. In its simplest form this instrument consists of a symmetrical body such as a cylinder, cone, or hemisphere with a small hole or piezometric opening drilled along its central axis. If circumstances do not permit or require an accurate traverse, center the pitot tube in the duct, determine the pressure differential (velocity pressure), calculate actual center velocity, and multiply this value by 0.9. The total pressure tube, or Pitot tube, provides a common method of measuring the stagnation pressure within a pipe, channel or duct flow. Using velocity pressures recorded at each location, calculate velocities and average them for final velocity value. ![]()
